What is Pride Month?

Pride Month is an annual celebration held in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots of 1969, a pivotal moment in LGBTQIA+ history that sparked the modern LGBTQIA+ rights movement. It serves as a time to honor the contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals, raise awareness about LGBTQIA+ rights and issues, and promote acceptance and equality.

Pride Month Facts:

  1. The first Pride parade took place in New York City on June 28, 1970, to mark the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall riots.
  2. Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots, but celebrations occur worldwide throughout the month.
  3. The rainbow flag, a symbol of LGBTQIA+ pride and diversity, was created by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978.
