Standing Up Together: National Stop Bullying Day and Empowering Youth

National Stop Bullying Day, observed annually on the second Wednesday of October, reminds us of something simple yet powerful: no child should ever feel unsafe or unwelcome because of the way they are treated by peers. Bullying should not be seen as a “normal” part of growing up. It is harmful, it impacts mental health, and it can leave everlasting scars.

At Western Youth Services (WYS), we strongly believe that all young people deserve environments where they feel supported, respected, and encouraged to thrive. This is a large part of why we dedicate our work to both youth bullying prevention and strengthening the importance of mental health among youth.

The Lasting Impact of Bullying

Bullying comes in many different forms like; name calling, spreading rumors, exclusion, and sometimes it’s even escalated to physical harm. Each can take a massive toll on a young person’s sense of safety and overall well being.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about 19.2% of students ages 12 to 18 reported being bullied during the 2021 to 2022 school year. Many experienced verbal harassment (13%) or were the subject of rumors (12%) (pacer.org).

Bullying is not just detrimental for the duration in which it is occurring. It can have deep emotional effects that children can carry with them throughout the rest of their lives. Youth who are bullied are more likely to struggle with depression, anxiety, and even thoughts of suicide. This is why focusing on mental health and resilience is so important when we talk about prevention.

Recognizing the Signs

Caring adults such as parents, educators, mentors, and community members play a key role in identifying when something is wrong. Signs that a young person may be experiencing bullying include:

  • Frequent headaches, stomachaches, or unexplained injuries
  • Avoiding friends or social activities
  • Falling behind in schoolwork or losing interest in learning
  • Sudden shifts in mood, self esteem, or confidence

If you notice these, you can help by opening up gentle, non judgmental conversations. Let them know that they are heard and believed. This is often the first step toward healing.

How WYS Programs Support Youth and Families

At Western Youth Services, we do not just talk about bullying prevention. We take action through programs designed to strengthen youth, families, and communities.

Bullying Prevention and Intervention Training

This free program provides educators, parents, and community members with practical tools to recognize, address, and prevent bullying in schools. It prepares adults to step in early and create safer environments where kids can focus on learning, friendships, and growth.

These no cost trainings are available at the RESET Toolbox, an online hub of mental health and educational resources. Registration is required, but once you sign up, you will have access to these powerful trainings and more.

Super Resilient® Youth

This research based curriculum gives young people the tools they need not only to navigate adversity but also to become leaders who break cycles of trauma. By building confidence, emotional awareness, and coping strategies, this program helps youth heal and grow into change makers who can stop bullying before it starts.

Both of these programs represent our belief that resilience, support, and education are the strongest tools in preventing bullying and protecting the mental health of our youth.
